Well I added one to my garage. The price was just too sweet to pass up. And it’s just too functional and practical. I think I see the light now. Oh, and it’s a manual!
Oh sorry, it isn’t that old thing though. It’s this! It's a brand new 2017.

That's a really nice looking bike you've got there. Looking forward to hearing about how handles your road trip.

Nice, someone at work recently picked up one of these as well. I walk by it and admire the retro yet modern graphics (and don’t envy commuting on a bike in this distracted rat race).

Those are sweet bikes, I would have to swap out the seat though as I find it to be very uncomfortable.

A few of my friends have picked these up recently. I have an Adventure psort sitting on the showroom. stupid nice bikes, if a bit underpowered

You going to do an oil change on the road? Or just go a few hundred miles beyond the first OCI?

It needs upgrades, though. It needs an exhaust that you can hear three blocks away, and some very crappy sounding speakers that you can crank up loud so that you can hear them through your helmet.

I’ll definitely post about it after I get back!

I’m not even a rider, but I remember reading Sean McDonald’s review of the AT, and it made me want to go buy one.
Enjoy it!

I feel like my feet would be a good 4 or 5 inches off of the ground if I sat on that thing. It looks tall.

Only a bit underpowered. And really only if you're used to something faster. Absolutely perfectly adequate though.

I actually really like it so far.

Price, and like how it rides. My list didn’t really have much of an order to it. I did more research. This just wasn’ t something I ever really looked at before, because Honda.

It is. I’m 5'11" and it’s a tip toe situation on flat ground.
![]() 07/03/2019 at 11:14 |

It looks so cool!
![]() 07/03/2019 at 11:16 |
|
I’m 5'6" and my legs are also short for someone of my height. I have never once bought a pair of long pants that didn’t need to be hemmed or cuffed.
I'm pretty sure I could get a leg over a Grom and flat foot it though.
![]() 07/03/2019 at 11:18 |

Eh, probably fine. I’d likely drop the oil right before leaving to flush out all the break in metals from the first few miles on a new trans, but I doubt it will make a difference either way. It’s a honda
![]() 07/03/2019 at 11:22 |

Back to ratchets: I think I’m going to buy a 1/2" ratchet as well. I have a Craftsman and it seems to me that Craftsman ratchets wear out, even the supposedly decent ones. I ordered a Blue Point 3/8" ratchet recently, but only had a few chances to use it.

Nice! Such pretty bikes. Definitely high on my list if I were to ever get an adv bike.

yep. that said, I have grown acustomer to the feverish wail of the daytona and the odd liter bike here and there. So speed has a new definition for me

I hate working on Hondas because there's no room under the hood and the Japanese like to put commonly replaced items in stupid places. Like the oil filter on the side of the block, which forces you to use a filter socket on a swivel at the end of an 18" daisy chain of extensions. Which you have to snake around the front subframe and steering rack.

The monkey looks pretty cool.
I am working towards getting my M permit. I’ve actually been looking at a lot of scooters lately because I think it would work better for me ergonomically. Plus, my other half isn't too keen on motorcycles so I'm trying to ease her into the idea by starting with something small just to get around town.

That gear wrench set decay linked is a great deal and their stuff is good quality. I haven't used those specific ones, but I do have a gearwrench ratchet and it's great.

Several have mentioned Gearwrench in this space. I might try one.

That made me lol. Though it also makes me curious, what do you dislike about Honda cars so much? Is it just that they are all boring appliance cars, or is it something from your experience as a mechanic?
![]() 07/03/2019 at 12:57 |
|
Valid thought!
![]() 07/03/2019 at 13:00 |
|
Boring appliances that aren’t built with any regard to logic or serviceability. They’re built to a cost and nothing else. They’re very good at making it look like they care about some other things , but they only care about cost. They're so poorly designed that working on them infuriates me. And they're way too much money for what you get. And they're much less reliable than the general public seems to think.

The little 1/4 drive flex head has become one of my favorite tools, especially for small motorbike fasteners. The whole set has fine teeth, can get into just about any space, and have a lifetime warranty. I certainly don’t have as much tool time as AMGtech, but I haven’t touched my craftsmen set since buying the gearwrench.

I’m finding the Craftsman stuff just doesn’t hold up. But I’m also not going berserk buying new stuff. Just what I need. I have individual sockets and wrenches that I bought in Germany when I was stationed there 30 years ago — Hazet Hat-zet — that has held up beautifully all these years. I’d invest in a Hazet ratchet, except all of the European ratchets have big plastic handles, which I do not like.
![]() 07/03/2019 at 13:13 |
|
I just ordered an 8mm 1/4-drive Hazet socket. $14 including shipping.
![]() 07/03/2019 at 13:19 |
|
I’ve had good luck with recent HF individual sockets, they are at least on the same level as craftsmen for cheaper. But I’ve also got a full set of 1/4" drive sockets from proto and the difference in quality is pretty large
![]() 07/03/2019 at 13:19 |
|
I bought a 22mm deep socket in 1/2" from Oreilly yesterday. $6.99. I’ll probably only use it this one time. I don’t mind paying for that 8mm because it’s going to get a lot of use. I’d rather pay top dollar for a good tool her and there that I’ll use, than buy a bunch of stuff I’ll seldom, if ever use.
![]() 07/03/2019 at 13:22 |
|
HF?
Are you saying that the Proto is better quality?
One thing I could use is some more extensions. Wobble is all the thing with mechanics nowadays. I grab the universal now and again, but not sure I do enough to justify investing in wobble stuff.
My 3/8 universal is also Hazet from my days in Germany. In all those years, I haven’t used it much. There was a parts store called Stahlgruber that I visited often and they had a tool section full of Hazet stuff. Souvenirs from my time in Germany in the 80s.

Harbor Freight :p
That magical place where you get a full set of throwaway sockets for $8

(that is a damn good deal... ) Let’ s put it this way: If I were to spend that much money pretty much the only way it would get past the spouse would be to spend it on land or a new(er) baler.
Maybe the stock market will go bonkers and I’ll suddenly have 6-9k to throw at toys....
![]() 07/04/2019 at 09:40 |

I neither need nor want a baler or land. So here I am! My girlfriend encouraged me. She's pretty awesome.
